When David Bowie & Brian Eno Made a Twin Peaks-Inspired Album, Outside (1995)
By all accounts, David Bowie was a star. He first rose to fame in the 1970s a process spurred by his creation and takeover of Ziggy Stardust the rocker Mars character. In the following decade, Lets Dance appeared after which it sold out stadiums and took control of the new MTV. However through it all and in fact until he died in 2016,, he kept at least a foot away from the mainstream. In the 1990s after an aesthetically clean stint with rock band Tin Machine Bowie tapped into his stardom to explore the full spectrum of his interests from basic to grotesque and from ordinary to terrible. This points to a lot in common between Bowie and another high profile David of his generation David Lynch one of the most famous film directors alive for a long time. Film critics Cristina Alvarez Lopez and Adrian Martin wrote There are many obvious and superficial connections and intersections between Lynch and Bowie. Both were engaged in cinema and music as well as painting theater and performing arts. Both are an actor Bowie is a little more traditional than Lynch. Lynch undoubtedly agrees with Bowie's insistence that my interpretation of my work is really irrelevant and that the interpretation of the listener or viewer is most important.
These words appear in Lopez and Martins's analysis of Twin Peaks the TV series Lynch created in collaboration with Mark Frost and Outside the album, Bowie created in collaboration with Brian Eno. When it premiered on ABC in the spring of 1990 Twin Peaks became a sensation by evoking a very familiar and exotic vibe the likes of which you've never seen on TV. She was also a pioneer in what Lopez and Adrian Martin call the dead girl/woman type which charts the mystery of a labyrinth from the discovery of a young woman's body. We remember that what brought Special Agent Dale Cooper to Twin Peaks Washington was the murder of Homecoming Queen Laura Palmer. What brings Art Crimes Unit detective Nathan Adler to Oxford Town NJ is the murder of fourteen-year-old Baby Grace Blue. Thus begins the story of Outside inspired by Twin Peaks Bowies' 1995 special entry into the Dead Girl/Woman genre. Like The Lynch and Frost Show Bowies album contains an eccentric cast Adler and Baby Grace but also weird criminal Leon Blank Argelia Touchstriek smuggler of Artistic Medicines and DNA Impressions An evil character known as the Artist and the Minotaur. They are all performed by Bowie himself who uses several dialects a technique practiced with his appearance in 1992s Twin Peaks Fire Walk with Me and sound processing techniques.
At the time the 75 minutes Nonlinear Gothic Drama Course as Bowie called it gave her listeners plenty to draw from not to mention the mainstream media that tried to promote it. This new project is about sexual violence and death says CBC's Laurie Brown in Typical TV coverage. But it's also about fusing these eternal humans with folk art and culture a process that fascinated Bowie more and more as the 90s progressed as well as the re-emergence of neo-paganism ritual body art and community fragmentation as shown in the official Outside creation video. Bowie and Eno wanted Outside officially 1. Outside to be the first in a series that would eventually form a diary in music and into the tapestry of what I felt at the turn of the millennium. At a press conference, Bowie hinted that the narrative could fall by the wayside just as Lynch and Frost had intended to leave Laura Palmer's death unresolved. The fact that the second volume never appeared only underscores the impressive imperfection of the outside which Lopez and Martin highlight as another similarity to Twin Peaks Both works are serialized and plural existing in various formal and informal forms in scattered parts excerpts not least the unreleased Wings of Leon that Bowie and Eno recorded before the album itself and in several fan comments.
Kind of came full circle in 1997 when Outsides I Confused soundtrack recorded the opening credits for Lynch's Lost Highway. But the work continued to offer possibilities until the end of Bowie's life We both loved this album and we felt like it fell through the cracks Inoue said. We talked about revisiting it and moving it to a new location. Despite Lynch's resistance to the explanation Bowie recognized until 1995 the objective significance of the deaths themselves. Their first single was out of the house called The Lesson of the Dirty Heart and The Lesson of the Dirty Concerned Is the Fact that Life Is Limited. For him Knowing that I have limited life on earth actually clears things up and makes me feel very optimistic. The boy knew or knew that life was too short to pursue your infatuation to the fullest.
