Ahead of The Orville Season 3 premiere Seth MacFarlane sat down with GQ to talk about the most famous characters. Looking back at the long-running animated sitcom MacFarlane discussed how The Simpsons influenced Family Guy as well as his general career path. Since its release Family Guy has been compared favorably and negatively to The Simpsons with some noting the similarity in plot structures between the two and criticizing them for simply taking a blunter approach to humor. Despite this Family Guy lied to enjoy a large fan base alongside The Simpsons as well as earning 27 Primetime Emmy nominations and 8 wins including best vocal performance for MacFarlane. However The Simpsons fared better through prestigious award shows being nominated for 78 Emmys and winning 34 including 11 for Outstanding Animation Program.
The popularity of both shows would peak when Family Guy and The Simpsons cross over in a 44 minute special written by Family Guy veteran Patrick Meighan in which the Griffins find themselves stuck in Springfield when they are robbed. And take them away. The Simpsons. The crossover received mixed reviews from critics with critics feeling it was too similar to Family Guy from The Simpsons in tone and didnt deliver what fans of both shows had been waiting for for years. With both Family Guy and The Simpsons renewed for future seasons on Fox it will be interesting to see how the two shows continue to inspire each other and if another intersection occurs.
