Season 4 of 'Mayans MC': Danny Pino in Miguel Galindo's Advanced Game
From co creator-creator, Elgin James the FX series Mayans M. is currently in its fourth season as Miguel Galindo Danny Pino tries to figure out what's next for him. Without his criminal empire or his family there, what's no telling what's next for Miguel but it's only a matter of time before he makes up his mind and decides which path he wants to take. During this one-on-one interview with Collider Pino talked about working with a viewer who is open to input exploring such a different side of his personality and not trying to get Miguel to empathize with the complexity of human nature and the evolutionary endgame. from Michael.
Danny Pino, Actually it was something that I talked about with the writers and show director Elgin [James] about last season. We were talking about Where do we believe Miguel? We have a very smooth and easy relationship on the set and Elgin loves input. He asks Where do you think your character is headed? He has very strong ideas and very active imagination as you can see as to where the characters are headed but he's also open to input so that was something we came up with together.
It seemed like a natural entry point for Season 4 that we didn't see from Miguel after we lost it all. There is a poetic touch. Love that Elgin added Miguel cemetery maintenance. He's back on the ground off the ground again instead of the high position he had it was the headline. He found himself in charge of dealing with the dead and having to maintain the cemetery and I thought that was incredibly poetic. It's a microcosm of Season 4 across the board across-the-board hair that spans the entire season.
What does this look like to you as an actor when you play a character that you played for a while and then you play this version of him where he doesn't even know who he is and everything has been stripped? Affiliate? How do you feel in practice and how do you deal with the character? Do you feel different?
Payne Oh sure. Just getting up in the morning and looking at myself not recognizing myself with the beard I had to grow over several months and my hair that had grown back. This you're making for a does not conversation about how to build a character because you're just growing out your hair but it's something that aesthetically and visually every morning when you look at yourself and say Oh sure I'm that guy. This is how people see me. My neighbors stop talking to me. People stop getting to know me. People just treat you differently and you start to act a little differently.
Actors love to work and I certainly do inside out but that was one way to get from the outside in. It was an interesting exploration for me. how do you do that? In real life adversity often strikes you and you cannot get to know the world in which you live. When something horrific happens in your family or in you or you receive horrific news your perspective and worldview change slightly. You are a little more confused about what happened. How did I get here? How did this happen to me? Who am I now that I received this news? I think that's that something Miguel has to experience. I've just tried to take advantage of that part of life that I lived and experienced and I've gone to the other extreme on several occasions in life. You look around and you don't get to know your life you don't really know how anything will get better but it is.
Does it feel like an uphill battle to make him a likable character or is it something you don't think about at all?
Benno No I don't care much about making him likable. Writing does some of that. Elgin does some of that. I think Elgin likes the color gray. Likes different shades of gray. It's not some kind of black and white. So when you find yourself rooting for someone just know that pretty soon you're going to hate that character. Anytime you think someone is the ugliest person you've ever seen on TV just know that the next moment you might actually like that person. It is an exploration of the extent of humanity. This is what Elgin is really looking forward to investigating. Honestly, I think he's bored with the one-sided characters. He's always trying to figure out how I can mess with this character if the character is so clean. And if the character gets too dirty how can I show that there is some humanity in them?
It's an interesting sight because it cants easily contain any of these weaknesses. It's a very masculine show and the fact that there are so many moments of vulnerability or passion is still amazing. Benno I think your finger is right on the vein. It is the complexity of human nature. It's the contradictions that we all have. We are not always good and we are not always bad. It explores that which Elgin is not only interested in but knows this group wants to address. We want that complexity. We want this contradiction. We want that binary. That's really what interests us too.
And sometimes manly men just need a good hug and a shout.
Benno I think we all at some point need that. The weakness that some of the characters show I think actually comes from courage and not weakness. Most weaknesses come from someone who has enough confidence or enough strength to show it. This is not the message because we don't really have a message. We are not a messenger. But if there is a message in the way we write our show and the way we act we go for the experience as authentic as possible with our characters.
At this point what does Miguel want? Does he know what he wants or is he trying to find out what he wants?
Beno Id never screws that up for you. I'll never tell you what Miguel wants. There were times when we were filming especially episodes four and five where Elgin and I were sitting on set and talking about Miguel's final game. A lot of the time we've had very concrete ideas of what it could be so I'm going to play a scene this way and then the next scene was going to say Okay what if that's the end of it? I would like to play this scene differently. This only speaks to the range we are trying to find in all the characters. I'm not quite sure like I said that even Miguel really knows what he wants at the start of the season. But he will know what he wants in the end.
It looks like there might be some clarity on the horizon.
Benno Yes he's definitely in the cocoon now. There was a transformation in the monastery. I was definitely very interested to see what happens to him as the season progresses and I think the fans will be as well. Maya m. Broadcast Tuesday nights on forex.
